So, after using this product for a while (multiple times daily in a household of coffee drinkers with friends who stop by almost daily for coffee) I can say that this thing makes wonderful coffee and is also very forgiving on your ratio of coffee to water.
The instructions could be a little better, however, a quick call to customer support will answer your questions.
This machine has a simple yet elegant design that uses simple plumbing to bring hot water to the brewing basket. First, you fill the hot water tank as per the first-time setup instructions. Then you put as much cold water into the machine as you want hot water to go into your coffee. You close the lid, which raisers a lever arm that takes a rubber seal off of a hole allowing the cold water to flow into the hot water tank. The hot water is then displaced by the cold water, forcing the exact amount of cold water you put in to come flowing through to your brewing basket, but at 200F.
After learning how this rig works, I was quite impressed with the simplicity of the design given how great a pot of coffee it makes.
I highly recommend 8 "heaping" tablespoons of grounds to 32oz of water. I'm not sure if this ratio is linear, so don't count on it to work 1 : 4 every time, but this ratio has served me and my friends very well.
By the way - on demand 200F water is an EXCELLENT help for doing the dishes when you have something a little stuck on. Just don't put beans or a filter in the brewing basket and pretend like you're making coffee. Handy!
