The Norpro 11.25 x 14-in. Expandable Over-the-Sink Colander makes it easy to rinse fruits and vegetables or drain pasta. The expandable design allows you to easily adjust it to fit over your sink or large pots for hands-free operation that keeps your fingers away from escaping steam from pasta dishes. The rubber feet on the bottom of the expandable arms keep the colander firmly in place, and the locking handles prevent the unit from retracting during use. The fine mesh is professional gauge for exceptional draining, and the durable stainless steel construction ensures that the colander will last through many periods of heavy use in your kitchen. The large basket easily holds large apples, pears and similar fruits as well as an ample amount of pasta. When finished, the durable construction allows you to rinse the colander clean to air dry for future use.
Best Used For:
Use the expandable colander to rinse healthy and nutritious fruit. The heavy-duty design also makes it a great choice for draining many different types of pasta.
I bought this collander because I was having a dinner party for 8 and I was afraid the pasta I was cooking wouldn't fit into my old (much smaller) collander. The "legs" of the collander were a little too short to stretch across the width of my sink but it worked fine across the "height" of the sink (i.e., from spigot to edge of counter). The moment of truth came when I poured out HUGE pot of pasta (two pounds worth) and it EASILY fit into the collander even with room to spare. I will totally use this for draining strawberries or veggies too -- its size makes it really great to use. Even though I usually cook for small numbers, the recipes I make usually serve 4 or more (and then I just pack up for leftovers/lunches), so the size will be convenient even for larger groups.
Oddly, sometimes I need to have two or three colanders going for "timed drains" (i.e., salted zucchini strips resting in one, rinsing chopped veggies in another, etc.). This is a quick solution that stores easily with a small footprint.
I had a similar colander that I purchased some years ago, but the 'handles' came unattached from the edge of the basket, making it very unstable. I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond to purchase a new one, but they were out of stock. So, I turned to this one and purchased it for about 2x the price of the BBB colander. It is nice and I like it, but it does now have supportive bands under the basket. My previous basket had them and the basket would sit upright if you took it into the garden to pick veggies. This one does not, it isn't horrible but it will rock to the side and if your basket is full then your produce spills out.
This is a sturdy, large strainer, with crookedish legs to hold it on the sinktop. But I haven't had any problems. However, I took it out of the dishwasher and it smelled weird, so I took a good look at it, and tons of food was caught and stuck under the metal rim around strainer. What a bummer. I don't know where it came from, but it sure is hard to get out!
