This book is all you need to learn how to can, dry, or freeze food. Not only does it give the usual recipes for jams and jellies, but also vegetables, pickles, meats, and more. It is a good resource for the experienced as well as the novice. Everything you would need to know is included in this book.
I bought this product to can grape juice and jelly from my backyard. I had been using various pots and pans from my personal supply. This product makes the job SO MUCH EASIER and FASTER! I can do up to 8 pint jars at a time and the jar handling tongs make the process MUCH SAFER! No more fingers & arms splashed and scalded by boiling water wrestling with regular tongs and hot mitts! I also LOVE the magnetic seal lifting tool which works great, but could use a slightly longer handle for reaching seals that have fallen to the bottom of this large pot.
Plan to use with canned goods along with the jar labels on the lids of my design. Since the lids get thrown away upon opening, these labels can be used to identify what's in the jar while it's in the fridge. Would be especially useful if in a sheet that could be printed like Avery labels but don't know if dot matrix printer ink would dissolve it after printing.
One of the handiest items I've found in years. I use these labels to indicate contents/dates not only of frozen foods, but also leftovers in the frig (now that I've gotten to the age when I can't remember how long it's been since I baked that
ham). They're also great to put on dishes that you take to a potluck or a neighbor. You do have to be careful if your hands are wet; they can start to dissolve when you don't want them to.
I have my mom's Blue Book Guild to Canning from the 1940s. The same quality info is in the new book as in the older one with the exception of some more updated recipes and methods.
Recently I bought the new Jelly and Jam Maker. I would like to have seen some recipes in this book for use with my new "toy." When the Jelly and Jam Maker arrived it has some recipes, and I understand that this is a new and state of the art product. When the next edition of the Blue Book Guide to Preserving comes out, I'll be the first in line to get it.
the wire rack seems dangerous to me. It is supposed to sit up hooked on the rim they load jars and lower rack into boiling water. Be Careful of the rack falling into the boiling water with a couple of jars on it and getting scalded. The rack is not safe to be on the rim while water is hot.
Also my pot arrived with a nickel size chip on the bottom edge so the paint is pealing off.
Overall not happy with it.... I should of bought it from a local store where I could have inspected it before buying it.
The Blue Book is an excellent guide for the first-time and regular canner. The instructional information is clear, well-written, and precise without being so technical as to be off-putting, either for water bath or pressure canning. There are many recipes included that are surprisingly interesting and that cover many different types of diets. The only down side is that there is not more information about changing recipes or creating original ones. Overall, this is a bible of a book, one that will be used for generations. Thank you, Ball!
My husband purchased the auto jam maker for me. I have never made jam or jelly before. I am having such a good time and I love the finished product. I pass some of my creations to my family members and friends. This toil some job is now so simplified, it is fun to do. Keep looking for other items to make jam and jellies out of.
This is a great product and easily adheres to any jar. I am constantly recycling all types of jars for storage herbs, spices, seeds, etc. and these labels are a great size. The best is that when I am ready to change the contents, the labels are easy to remove and the scraper and Goo Be Gone are not needed. Love them!
