It's a pretty safe bet that your mother - and your grandmother - owned a covered roasting pan like this one. The same U.S. company has been making these black porcelain-on-steel roasters, specked with white flecks, since 1871. This large roaster has a "tree" embossed pattern on the bottom, to partially lift food off the surface. To store the pan, just invert the lid. The Granite Ware roaster is a practical, economical, time-honored choice. No roasting rack included. Not safe for glass/ceramic/induction stoves.

Just what we needed too cook our roast for Thanksgiving.

I much prefer this over any of the teflon non-stick stuff.

This was a gift for a young mother who used plastic bags to make holiday turkey. Her husband is so happy that I taught her how to use the old-fashioned enamel roasting pan. We had Christmas dinner together and the turkey was moist and browned the old fashioned way. I looked in every store I knew of to find an enamel pan. Cooking.com was the one place with a reasonable price. Thank you Cooking.com.

It appears to be lighter weight than my last covered roaster. The price was so good I don't think one could go wrong here. We shall see about the quality Thanksgiving 2008!

I originally purchased the 16-in. Oval Roasting Pan to make a delicious brisket. I had the recipe for it, but did not have a roasting pan with a lid. I ordered the pan shortly before I left to spend Christmas with family in New York. I assumed that it would arrive soon after I got back from my trip, and it did. Two days after I got back home, the pan was on my doorstep, thanks to the amazing shipping at Cooking.com.

I didn’t realize that the pan was so large. It’s quite big, big enough that I’m thinking of getting rid of my other roasting pan to clear some space in my small kitchen. Everything that I could do in a “traditional”, lidless roaster, I could do in this roasting pan. The roasting pan is just like the one my mother has, but seems quite a bit larger than hers seems. In fact, it was so large, that I went out and bought three half-briskets to cook in it, but only two of them fit in the pan. I put one in the freezer, so now I can have brisket any time I like.

The roasting pan would fit in the oven, but this recipe called for stovetop cooking, and it worked just the way it should. I gave it five stars, but I probably would’ve given it four and a half instead because it wouldn’t fit in my dishwasher, which is standard size. Instead, I had to soak it overnight in the sink in order to get it clean, but it’s not a pan that I will use on a daily basis, so it isn’t that big of a deal. Either way, I am very happy with my roasting pan, and the brisket that I made in it was delicious!

Classic roaster still best

by Christine, NY

Always appreciated my huge rectangular enamel over metal roasting pan, it was starting to wear after 25+ years, finally found this one here. You can't beat the practicality of this set: durable yet lightweight, easy to use and clean; the dark color and enamel retain the heat so items cook faster and moister. Best of all is the naturally slick enamel surface that won't interact with acids in food and is easy to clean, and will never peel off like the toxic "non-stick" cookware that is sold today. The "tree" design in the bottom provides a raised surface for roasts without having to use a rack, and is a nice touch of last-century whimsy. The best turkeys come from these roasters. Fantastic value, and nice to see it's made in the USA, too.

Even though I have a great Calphalon roasting pan, this is an American classic and is incomparable for its particular uses.

I needed a roaster for my annual Thanksgiving turkey, and this one worked great. It was definitely sturdy enough for my stuffed 17-lb turkey, and it cleaned up really easily afterwards.

I have already roasted a duck and a turkey. Better than any other roaster and check out that price. Our grandparents knew a good thing--both of mine had this style and now I know why!

Wonderful turkey roaster

by Mary Ann, CA
January 11, 2009

I am very pleased with the quality of this roaster. I look forward to using it next Thanksgiving. I've been using this kind of roaster for about 40 years. My mother gave me hers, but it's time for a new one. She used it for about 20 years before she gave it to me. My turkey always turns out perfect. I wouldn't use any other roaster.
