I scream, you scream, we all … well, you know the rest. The KitchenAid® 2-qt. Ice Cream Maker Attachment turns your KitchenAid stand mixer into a dessert lover’s dream. Make homemade vanilla, chocolate or strawberry ice cream -- and those are just the options if you want to be boring. If you can dream it, you can ice cream it. This KitchenAid attachment can help you whip up classics like chocolate chip or butter pecan, or you can experiment with exotic flavors such as bourbon-maple, salted caramel or basil-ginger. Try your hand at Italian gelato, sorbets and frozen custards. If you’re not feeling particularly creative, easy-to-use recipes are included with the instructions. Making your own ice cream is fun for the whole family, and because you made it yourself, you can be sure that there are no additives, preservatives or ingredients you can’t pronounce in your sweet treats. The industry’s largest frozen mixing bowl is large enough to whip up 2 quarts of any frozen dessert. That’s more than enough soft serve for the whole family and then some. The dasher does all of the hard work of churning right in the mixing bowl, so there is no need to tire out your forearms to keep the batter from icing up. The included adapter ring allows the bowl to fit tilt-head as well as bowl-lift KitchenAid mixers and cleanup is super easy (even if you don’t have anyone to lick the dasher …).

Best Used For:
Homemade ice creams, sorbets, gelatos and custards.

An ice cream maker was not a necessity in our kitchen, but we thought it would be a fun addition for our kitchenaid HD mixer. It has handled ice cream and gelato well, taking about half an hour or so of mixing. We just store the bowl in the freezer for the next time we want to use it. One of the benefits of the bowl attachment is not adding an extra appliance around the house that takes up room and has another motor that might break.

A couple reviewers noticed a clicking noise after their ice cream had been mixing for a while. That's a handy feature that built in to the device. Once the ice cream gets thick enough, the mixer paddle will start to audibly click, letting you know that it should be done.

    I recommend this product.

  • Keep this in the freezer- then, it will always be ready when you are. Make sure the mixture you pour in is very cold. Before turning on the machine, wrap saran wrap around the top to help keep the cold temperature of your mixture. If your kitchen is even slightly warm while this is trying to freeze your mixture -you will end up with slush. The key is to place this in the coldest room of your home (mine is the laundry room with the dryer off, of course). Let it continuously run for at least 25 minutes and don't peek under the saran wrap or Glad wrap. The Silver Spoon cookbook has great gelato recipes for this machine and other ice cream makers. I wish they sold the attachment for $50 -that would make it a great value and extra nice accessory for one's Kitchen Aid. The Krups Glaciere is also very good if you have room in your kitchen pantry or closet for one more kitchen gadget. Otherwise, purchase this when on sale and always keep in the freezer.

    I recommend this product.

  • Performs Well; Don't Rely on Included Recipes

I purchased the KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment to pair with my KitchenAid Artisan mixer. Based on reviews I read here and elsewhere, I chose this model over a stand-alone ice cream maker because I anticipated it would make reasonably good ice cream and would relieve me from purchasing another countertop appliance. Overall, I am pleased with the purchase. It took me some time to get used to, but after making three recipes, I got the hang of it.

The device performed as advertised, producing soft-serve ice cream in about 30 minutes. I found that 2-quart recipes worked best, because these recipes filled the freeze bowl. Recipes for smaller quantities worked fine and froze more quickly (about 20 minutes), but I think the texture suffered (perhaps due to the quick freeze time).

You do have to make sure the freeze bowl is very cold; I found that freezing it for 24-48 hours at the coldest freezer setting provided about 25-30 minutes of working time to make the ice cream. After 30 minutes, the freeze bowl reached the temperature of the batter (i.e., the ice cream ingredients in the freeze bowl) and letting it run beyond that time only resulted in melting of (rather than freezing of) the batter.

While running, the mixer is fairly loud and my mixer made some noises that suggested it might not have enough horsepower to do the job, but so far all has gone well. I would be curious to see if the attachment works more quietly or differently on the more powerful mixers that KitchenAid makes.

The recipes included with the attachment were very disappointing. For one, the custard recipes, if followed to the letter, will fail to produce properly formed custard. Also, I thought the proportions were not as flavorful as those in recipes I found elsewhere on the Internet.

I didn't have any trouble setting up the dasher (i.e., the ice cream

    I recommend this product.

  • Ice Cream Bowl Review

I love this product. Didn't think that Kitchenaid had so many attachments. Saves a lot of money not to have to buy additional kitchen appliances. This product works as a regular ice cream maker would. It's fun to try recipes. I have made two of them so far and both of them were a huge success!

    I recommend this product.

  • A great addition to your home kitchen

A little pricey, as are all KitchenAid attachments, but works exactly as expected and I am delighted. I have two freezers plus the one in my kitchen fridge, so keeping it frozen is not an issue for me, though I could certainly understand why it might be a problem for others. It simply means you can't just make ice cream or sorbet on the spur of the moment. I am very happy with this attachment.

  • yummy quick ice cream

I made ice cream for Sunday dinner. It was done in just about 15 minutes, or less, and was creamy and delicious. I think we'll be having a lot more ice cream around here - with no messy salt and ice. So easy...

  • I wish I had purchased sooner

I had another ice cream maker that lasted only 8 times making the ice cream. Have had a Kitchen Aide mixer of some sort since the 70's. I also have a lot of other Kitchen Aide attachments & I should of thought to purchase this sooner.
Easy to make & does a wonderful job with the mixer. Only problem is making room in my freezer to place to bowl.

    I recommend this product.

  • I thought this sounded like a great kitchen aid attachment, but then I started reading other reviews and it seems like a lot of people were having leaking issues. I've only had it for a couple weeks, but I hope that this doesn't happen to mine.
The ice cream it makes is good, but now I wonder if I should have bought a different brand.

  • Just received this ice cream maker a couple of weeks ago and have already made three batches. You have to make sure that you add enough ice cream base (>2 c.) to the mixer otherwise it does not churn properly. Did not try any of the recipes included with the ice cream maker, but made a batch of gelato, ice cream, and frozen yogurt from recipes found at epicurious.com and the food network website. So far everything has come out great. A wonderful product as long as you have the freezer space to keep the bowl in the freezer so that you can make ice cream when you want to and to store the ice cream after it comes out of the maker since it really does need to firm up for at least several hours before it can be served.

    I recommend this product.

  • Make it Quick

Unless you can do this in about 20 minutes, don't. I recommend that you pre-chill all ingredients, which I thought I had. Twenty minutes into to process and the ice cream maker, that had been frozen for at least 24 hours, was beginning to get warm.

  • One size does NOT fit all

The Ice Cream Maker Attachment by KitchenAid claims it will fit all KitchenAid stand mixers. The bowl fits, but the turning attachment must be force-fit and after turning for 20-30 minutes (as instructed), plastic shavings from the force-fit head fell into the ice cream.

After turning the ice cream for 20-30 minutes, the ice cream must be kept in the freezer for hours before its' as solid as ice cream should be.
