I scream, you scream, we all … well, you know the rest. The KitchenAid® 2-qt. Ice Cream Maker Attachment turns your KitchenAid stand mixer into a dessert lover’s dream. Make homemade vanilla, chocolate or strawberry ice cream -- and those are just the options if you want to be boring. If you can dream it, you can ice cream it. This KitchenAid attachment can help you whip up classics like chocolate chip or butter pecan, or you can experiment with exotic flavors such as bourbon-maple, salted caramel or basil-ginger. Try your hand at Italian gelato, sorbets and frozen custards. If you’re not feeling particularly creative, easy-to-use recipes are included with the instructions. Making your own ice cream is fun for the whole family, and because you made it yourself, you can be sure that there are no additives, preservatives or ingredients you can’t pronounce in your sweet treats. The industry’s largest frozen mixing bowl is large enough to whip up 2 quarts of any frozen dessert. That’s more than enough soft serve for the whole family and then some. The dasher does all of the hard work of churning right in the mixing bowl, so there is no need to tire out your forearms to keep the batter from icing up. The included adapter ring allows the bowl to fit tilt-head as well as bowl-lift KitchenAid mixers and cleanup is super easy (even if you don’t have anyone to lick the dasher …).

Best Used For:
Homemade ice creams, sorbets, gelatos and custards.

An ice cream maker was not a necessity in our kitchen, but we thought it would be a fun addition for our kitchenaid HD mixer. It has handled ice cream and gelato well, taking about half an hour or so of mixing. We just store the bowl in the freezer for the next time we want to use it. One of the benefits of the bowl attachment is not adding an extra appliance around the house that takes up room and has another motor that might break.

A couple reviewers noticed a clicking noise after their ice cream had been mixing for a while. That's a handy feature that built in to the device. Once the ice cream gets thick enough, the mixer paddle will start to audibly click, letting you know that it should be done.

    I recommend this product.

  • Keep this in the freezer- then, it will always be ready when you are. Make sure the mixture you pour in is very cold. Before turning on the machine, wrap saran wrap around the top to help keep the cold temperature of your mixture. If your kitchen is even slightly warm while this is trying to freeze your mixture -you will end up with slush. The key is to place this in the coldest room of your home (mine is the laundry room with the dryer off, of course). Let it continuously run for at least 25 minutes and don't peek under the saran wrap or Glad wrap. The Silver Spoon cookbook has great gelato recipes for this machine and other ice cream makers. I wish they sold the attachment for $50 -that would make it a great value and extra nice accessory for one's Kitchen Aid. The Krups Glaciere is also very good if you have room in your kitchen pantry or closet for one more kitchen gadget. Otherwise, purchase this when on sale and always keep in the freezer.

  • Performs Well; Don't Rely on Included Recipes

I purchased the KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment to pair with my KitchenAid Artisan mixer. Based on reviews I read here and elsewhere, I chose this model over a stand-alone ice cream maker because I anticipated it would make reasonably good ice cream and would relieve me from purchasing another countertop appliance. Overall, I am pleased with the purchase. It took me some time to get used to, but after making three recipes, I got the hang of it.

The device performed as advertised, producing soft-serve ice cream in about 30 minutes. I found that 2-quart recipes worked best, because these recipes filled the freeze bowl. Recipes for smaller quantities worked fine and froze more quickly (about 20 minutes), but I think the texture suffered (perhaps due to the quick freeze time).

You do have to make sure the freeze bowl is very cold; I found that freezing it for 24-48 hours at the coldest freezer setting provided about 25-30 minutes of working time to make the ice cream. After 30 minutes, the freeze bowl reached the temperature of the batter (i.e., the ice cream ingredients in the freeze bowl) and letting it run beyond that time only resulted in melting of (rather than freezing of) the batter.

While running, the mixer is fairly loud and my mixer made some noises that suggested it might not have enough horsepower to do the job, but so far all has gone well. I would be curious to see if the attachment works more quietly or differently on the more powerful mixers that KitchenAid makes.

The recipes included with the attachment were very disappointing. For one, the custard recipes, if followed to the letter, will fail to produce properly formed custard. Also, I thought the proportions were not as flavorful as those in recipes I found elsewhere on the Internet.

I didn't have any trouble setting up the dasher (i.e., the ice cream

  • Tangerine Sorbet

I have five mature tangerine trees in my yard. It's tangerine season and this has been just great to make tangerine sorbet. Easy to use, and well made like all the attachments for a KitchenAid. My juicer is a KitchenAid attachment as well to juice the tangerines.

    I recommend this product.

  • The ice cream attachment requires much room in the freezer. I tried one each of the ice cream, sorbet, and sherbet recipes and all were very soft when the process was completed and they became rock hard when stored in the freezer. It is easier to buy frozen desserts from the grocery store.

  • The ice cream attachment works really well. Sorbet's are one of my favorite things to make. It is so easy and with fresh fruit available you can make many different kinds. It's great to have in the freezer for a nutritious snack or impress guests with a variety of sorbets to choose from.

  • A bit more pricey than a stand alone ice cream maker, it is very useful and is a multi-tasker since you can use your stand mixer for *so* many other things as well.

The ice cream surely can't be good for you since it tastes so good. :)

  • I read the reviews about this product before purchasing it. It is true that it should have some type of handle on it to make it easier to handle. Sounds redundent, doesn't it? I think it's wonderful that you don't need ice or rock salt. Just put it in the freezer. Have only made two batches of ice cream thus far. My computer was down and I needed to look up recipes. The book that comes with it only has 3 recipes in it. That was a bit disappointing. Overall, I am very pleased.

  • This ice cream maker is incredible. I have tried three different recipes to determine which we like better and all three are tremendous! It's really hard to choose but we are thrilled with our choice of ice cream maker. I just keep the bowl in the freezer that way when the mood strikes it's always ready.

It makes a ton of ice cream too. I usually use 1 1/2 quart recipes but the ice cream maker will take up to 2 quarts, I know I have tried and it was delish.

The texture of the ice cream depends on the recipe, but most of the recipes I have made are 2/3rds heavy cream and 1/3rd 1/2 & 1/2 or whole milk. The result is way creamier than that icky 4th of July picnic variety ice milk!

    I recommend this product.

  • I love my Kitchen Aid stand mixer and my affection for it only grows when I get cool attachments like this. Setup was easy (read the booklet first!) and I keep the bowl in the freezer all the time so I'm always ready to go. This attachment is super easy to use and really makes your stand mixer a required kitchen tool. Be aware of the 4+ hours required for ripening or else your dinner guests might become overnight guests! Recipes in the enclosed guide are limited so hit the web to find others. We have an egg allergy in the house, and there are plenty of non-egg recipes that turn out quite well. Machine is a bit noisy but most ice cream makers are and I think it's worth it!

  • I gave this to my sister as a birthday gift after she hinted many times that the ice cream attachment is what she wanted more than anything else. The reason she wanted this ice cream maker is because it requires much less storage space than conventional ice cream makers. She only had it long enough to freeze the bowl and immediately used it. She has told me numerous times how much she loves the ease of use. The only downside is that there were not many recipes included.

  • I liked the ice cream attachment, but found that it took longer to freeze the ice cream than indicated on the instructions. (If you don't freeze it long enough in the machine, it ices in the freezer.) Also, I really don't like having to freeze the bowl for 17 hours before use.
Otherwise the ice cream was very tasty.

  • The only draw back was that you have to freeze the ice cream attachment for 15 hours. I probably could have used less time but I only used it once so far and I wanted to follow all directions. Operation was simple and mixing the ingredients didn't take long. Results were very good. Could use more recipes in the booklet but I think most recipes will work with this attachment as long as the time to freeze the bowl and to cool the ingredients after mixing are the same. Overall I'm happy with the attachment.
