An ice cream maker was not a necessity in our kitchen, but we thought it would be a fun addition for our kitchenaid HD mixer. It has handled ice cream and gelato well, taking about half an hour or so of mixing. We just store the bowl in the freezer for the next time we want to use it. One of the benefits of the bowl attachment is not adding an extra appliance around the house that takes up room and has another motor that might break.
A couple reviewers noticed a clicking noise after their ice cream had been mixing for a while. That's a handy feature that built in to the device. Once the ice cream gets thick enough, the mixer paddle will start to audibly click, letting you know that it should be done.
Keep this in the freezer- then, it will always be ready when you are. Make sure the mixture you pour in is very cold. Before turning on the machine, wrap saran wrap around the top to help keep the cold temperature of your mixture. If your kitchen is even slightly warm while this is trying to freeze your mixture -you will end up with slush. The key is to place this in the coldest room of your home (mine is the laundry room with the dryer off, of course). Let it continuously run for at least 25 minutes and don't peek under the saran wrap or Glad wrap. The Silver Spoon cookbook has great gelato recipes for this machine and other ice cream makers. I wish they sold the attachment for $50 -that would make it a great value and extra nice accessory for one's Kitchen Aid. The Krups Glaciere is also very good if you have room in your kitchen pantry or closet for one more kitchen gadget. Otherwise, purchase this when on sale and always keep in the freezer.62 of 64 users found this helpful. Was it helpful to you? Yes | No Report Violation »
Performs Well; Don't Rely on Included Recipes
I purchased the KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment to pair with my KitchenAid Artisan mixer. Based on reviews I read here and elsewhere, I chose this model over a stand-alone ice cream maker because I anticipated it would make reasonably good ice cream and would relieve me from purchasing another countertop appliance. Overall, I am pleased with the purchase. It took me some time to get used to, but after making three recipes, I got the hang of it.
The device performed as advertised, producing soft-serve ice cream in about 30 minutes. I found that 2-quart recipes worked best, because these recipes filled the freeze bowl. Recipes for smaller quantities worked fine and froze more quickly (about 20 minutes), but I think the texture suffered (perhaps due to the quick freeze time).
You do have to make sure the freeze bowl is very cold; I found that freezing it for 24-48 hours at the coldest freezer setting provided about 25-30 minutes of working time to make the ice cream. After 30 minutes, the freeze bowl reached the temperature of the batter (i.e., the ice cream ingredients in the freeze bowl) and letting it run beyond that time only resulted in melting of (rather than freezing of) the batter.
While running, the mixer is fairly loud and my mixer made some noises that suggested it might not have enough horsepower to do the job, but so far all has gone well. I would be curious to see if the attachment works more quietly or differently on the more powerful mixers that KitchenAid makes.
The recipes included with the attachment were very disappointing. For one, the custard recipes, if followed to the letter, will fail to produce properly formed custard. Also, I thought the proportions were not as flavorful as those in recipes I found elsewhere on the Internet.
I didn't have any trouble setting up the dasher (i.e., the ice cream
Loved this attachment for my mixer. I've been wanting to make homemade ice
cream again, for a long time but just couldn't justify the cost of an electric ice cream maker. When I saw this one, it sounded perfect and it worked with
something I already had.
I liked not having to mess with ice and salt and I used a recipe my mother
gave me years ago - it turned out perfect!
Of course, you have to make sure the attachment is completely frozen
before doing another batch of ice cream but I didn't feel that was a big deal.
I made the Triple Chocolate Chunk IC form the recipe book that came with the icecream attachment. The Ic turned out great-very rich. The process was just a bit messy. The drive assembly and dasher are kinda tricky. When the IC started freezing, the mechanism started to click (maybe the two pieces were not fully engaged).32 of 35 users found this helpful. A Birthday Gift From Him but for Him
When my husband asked what I wanted for my birthday, I told him I wanted the ice cream attachment for my KitchenAid mixer (which was also a gift a couple years ago). It's the perfect gift -- from him to me for him . :-) The man LOVES to buy me appliances for special holidays and birthdays! I'v made 2 batches of ice cream so far, and it's so much easier than those makers that you have to remember to go turn every 15 min. or so which the handle broke on. LOVE IT!18 of 22 users found this helpful. Was it helpful to you? Yes | No Report Violation »
This is the second ice cream maker that my family has owned. The Krups that we originally had was too small and didn't seem powerful enough. We love this. Simple to use. Canister freezes properly. Would definitely buy again.15 of 19 users found this helpful. Was it helpful to you? Yes | No Report Violation »
Easy Ice Cream Maker!
I purchased this ice cream maker because I was in the market for one and already had the kitchen aid mixer, it is a great attachment, I'm so glad I bought it. It's so easy to use, freeze the bowl, put the bowl and the padel on, pour in your batter, out comes great ice cream in 30 minutes! Great value for the money.14 of 17 users found this helpful. Just received this ice cream maker a couple of weeks ago and have already made three batches. You have to make sure that you add enough ice cream base (>2 c.) to the mixer otherwise it does not churn properly. Did not try any of the recipes included with the ice cream maker, but made a batch of gelato, ice cream, and frozen yogurt from recipes found at epicurious.com and the food network website. So far everything has come out great. A wonderful product as long as you have the freezer space to keep the bowl in the freezer so that you can make ice cream when you want to and to store the ice cream after it comes out of the maker since it really does need to firm up for at least several hours before it can be served.13 of 15 users found this helpful. The ice cream attachment works really well. Sorbet's are one of my favorite things to make. It is so easy and with fresh fruit available you can make many different kinds. It's great to have in the freezer for a nutritious snack or impress guests with a variety of sorbets to choose from.13 of 13 users found this helpful. Was it helpful to you? This attachment worked very well and produced ice cream very quickly. I Like the fact that I don't have to have another specialized machine.12 of 17 users found this helpful. Was it helpful to you? Yes | No Report Violation »
This ice cream maker is incredible. I have tried three different recipes to determine which we like better and all three are tremendous! It's really hard to choose but we are thrilled with our choice of ice cream maker. I just keep the bowl in the freezer that way when the mood strikes it's always ready.
It makes a ton of ice cream too. I usually use 1 1/2 quart recipes but the ice cream maker will take up to 2 quarts, I know I have tried and it was delish.
The texture of the ice cream depends on the recipe, but most of the recipes I have made are 2/3rds heavy cream and 1/3rd 1/2 & 1/2 or whole milk. The result is way creamier than that icky 4th of July picnic variety ice milk!
good, practical choice
If you already have a KitchenAid mixer, this ice cream maker is a good, practical choice. It works well, usually freezes faster than the instructions say, and makes great sorbet and ice cream. Just be careful not to overfill the bowl-- you'll be left with a mess!11 of 13 users found this helpful. Was it helpful to you? Yes | No Report Violation »
Triple Chocolate = Triple Disappointment
Soon after the ice cream maker attachment arrived - I made the triple chocolate recipe for my chocoholic husband - and even he had a problem choking it down. Very expensive ingredients to be so hard to swallow. Recipe does say it is sweet - but promises will not be so much so after ripening - save your money - don't believe everything you read in the recipe portion of the booklet.
The attachment itself seems to do what it promises, though. But this you might as well take to the bank as absolute truth in the booklet - when it says make sure to freeze the maker-bowel ... make sure you freeze it.
Mine was in the back by the ice maker for two days and even so, ice cream was not even hard enough to serve as soft Got better consistency during the ripening process.
One size does NOT fit all
The Ice Cream Maker Attachment by KitchenAid claims it will fit all KitchenAid stand mixers. The bowl fits, but the turning attachment must be force-fit and after turning for 20-30 minutes (as instructed), plastic shavings from the force-fit head fell into the ice cream.
After turning the ice cream for 20-30 minutes, the ice cream must be kept in the freezer for hours before its' as solid as ice cream should be.
I bought this attachment as a birthday present for my daughter and she raves about it and the fancy unusual ice creams she has already made.11 of 12 users found this helpful. Was it helpful to you? Yes | No Report Violation »
I made real vanilla ice cream with it following recipe from a great Canadian chef (Patrice Demers). It was delicious and easy do do with the ice-cream maker.10 of 17 users found this helpful. Was it helpful to you? Yes | No Report Violation »
Makes Ice Cream Quick
The ice cream maker works very well. I found out why they say to turn on machine before adding liquid- it freezes on contact, preventing the rotor from turning. As usual, fillow directions (smile).
Ice Cream Attachement
Worked like a charm. Would recommend this product to those who like refresh sorbet and ice cream that are rich in taste and flavor. Easy to use. The colder the unit the faster it freezes so turn down your freezer and even chill the blade attachment as this will help.10 of 13 users found this helpful. Was it helpful to you? Easy to use, good results
I have only used it once, but it was very easy to use and the results were delicious! I like that it is not another machine to store - just the bowl and a couple parts.10 of 14 users found this helpful. Was it helpful to you? Yes | No Report Violation »
