For making gravies and sauces, this separator helps you save the flavor, straining out greasy fat. To use, pour liquid into the separator. Fat rises to the top, while leaner parts settle to the bottom. The heat-resistant strainer catches unwanted food bits, and the stopper prevents fat from entering the spout when you pour liquid back into your pot to finish cooking. A shield stops fat from spilling over the top of the separator. Measurement markings add convenience, and the non-slip handle provides a comfortable grip. Holds four cups.

Problem is I'm not sure how this thing works. My mom has the smaller version (2cup) and it works great, but I had a really hard time with the fat separation in this size.

It's great to be able to make gravy with drippings without having to go through all sorts or contortions to keep the grease and fat out. The strainer lid is a handy bonus!

fat separator

I have used this a few times in the last month and it works well. The only problem is, if you don't have enough liquid to go above the level of the bottom part of the spout it doesn't really work. In that case you need the smaller size. But overall I like it. The other way to separate the fat is to let the liquid chill and then the fat will rise to the top and you can scrape it off.

Great Timesaver

I can't believe it took me this many years of spooning off the fat before I found this product. My Thanksgiving gravy was so easy this year (and also delicious). If you only cook a turkey once a year this product is worth it's weight in gold! Cooking.com, as usual has great packing and prompt delivery.

Great if you cook Stock as often as I do.

The shape adn structure of the item is well suited for what it does. For large amounts of stock or broth it perfectly separates the liquid from the fat.. It does not work for small amounts and technically nothing out would be effective in small amounts. I use this item all the time now and like what I see.

My 5-yr old great niece says...........Auntie, it's magic! We were quiet pleased with the fat separator. It's great to purchase a product and it actually performs the way it should. We(my niece and I) really love it. I only wish it came in a larger cup capacity.

Was great for our 25 lb. Thanksgiving turkey

by Arthur, MA

I haven't run into an Oxo product that I haven't been happy with. This fat separator was big enough to hold all of the drippings from a 25 lb. turkey which was roasted in 2 cups of chicken stock. The top strainer is a great help and the spout plug makes such a difference. Why didn't I think of that?

fat strainer

by Candace, PA
January 7, 2009

At Thanksgiving we always need a strainer for the turkey gravy. This one really has the capacity along with the different strainers to accomplish the task without a problem. It is a bit large to store but that is what I wanted as it will accomodate the large amounts for Thanksgiving cooking as well as smaller portions for everyday. It's perfect for what I needed.

Good product. Much faster than refrigeration to solidify/remove fat from broth, strainer worked well, very little loss if you are careful decanting.

I'm not sure

by Sally, TX

I'm not sure how this works, actually - it looked so great on America's Test Kitchen but when I tried it I couldn't see how the fat was separated. I've only tried it once, and the sauce was very hot, so I'm not sure how much fat could be separated. I haven't given up on it - will try it again the next time I have the opportunity, and see what I think! Very nice quality, and I have used it for measuring as well.

I saw it had mixed reviews but was recommended by the Test Kitchen show, so I thought I'll give it a try. I followed all the directions and pulled the little plug, and it did hold back most of the fat. I also like the built-in strainer at the top. While the best method to degrease your soups, stews, and sauces is still to leave it in the fridge overnight until the fat solidifies and can be scooped off, there's not always time for that and this may well be second best.

Works well enough for modest volumes of liquid, just don't try to do too much at one time.

Good gravy!!

At first when I unpacked this big 4 cup gravy separator I thought thus thing is too big. But, juices from a 15 pound turducken later, it was just right for straining and separating all the juicy goodness from the fat. Worked perfectly.

Very nice. Now I don't have to skim the fat off the top of my soups and gravies. They also taste better, because I can control the fat content. Easy to clean.

This thing rocks!

by Jennifer, MI

I ordered this for Thanksgiving because I was tired of trying to separate the fat from the good stuff for gravy. The spout stopper is nice because it keeps the fat out; just install the stopper after filling the measuring cup and the displacement of air pushed the fat from the spout up in to the cup portion.

My only dislike is that the holes on the strainer are a bit large; think large colander holes. Its not a huge deal as I dont mind a more rustic gravy.

Its also nice that the strainer is recessed a bit in the cup allowing for faster pouring in lieu of the model that has the strainer with no recess.

Another bonus is that is not a specialty gadget; we use it as a regular measuring cup when not making gravy.
