Initial Review Follow-up.
This a follow-up to my previous review. That being said...
So I re-ordered another set after it became available again. And this time, the Postman delivered.
This is a great knife travel set. 5 Stars.
The three knives are all part of Wusthof's "Classic Knife" line (the ones we all know and love). They're very sharp. The 6" Chef's knife is really all that you need for such a compact travel kit. An 8" would have been too much.
There is an identical knife set that's cheaper but features Wusthof's "Gourmet Knife" line. Everything's the same except for the three knives.
The set comes in a 12.5" X 6.5" X 1.5" semi-rigid canvas case, with an internal canvas flap that safely protects the knives.
On sale, these three knives alone are worth more than what the whole set is selling for. What a deal.
The kitchen shears come apart into two pieces for easy cleaning. I would have preferred that one of the finger holes was a bit longer (three finger size), as is traditional for kitchen shears. But that's easily replaceable. Ditto for the Waiter's Corkscrew, if you should have a particularly favorite one. The knife sharpener is a combination steel and ceramic "V" set up that's more than adequate to do the job.
Safety note: As shown in the picture, all the knife edges face toward the center. This is for photographic purposes, as well as identification/legal reasons (so that the Wusthof label is clearly shown indicating the "Classic" line. Same for the "Gourmet" line knife set). As I've said, the knives are very sharp. While removing the center serrated knife, you can't help but cut your fingers several times against the Chef's knife sharp blade. So turn the knife over so that the blade faces outward (zipper side). Problem solved. Not a design flaw, just the way it is.
But I wasn't satisfied.
So I found a very good 6" Boning/Utility knife with its very own canvas sheaf.
All told: 11.5" long. It fit just perfectly sitting next to the Chef's knife.
You'll also notice that there is a gap between the corkscrew and knife sharpener. This space is also covered with an elastic strap, just begging to be filled with something.
But what. A fork? A spoon? Or a combination fork/spoon?
Since this is such a great travel set: ideal for Motels, Hotels, or Condos with kitchens and their very cheap knife sets (you know the ones that look like they were used to cut bricks with), not to mention campouts or even your favorite "bug-out" bag. But what you need is fire or a means to make fire. So I added a Bic lighter for that spot. Perfect fit.
Now my Travel Set was complete!
Bottom line: Great knife set at a great price. Same for the "Gourmet Travel Knife Set", in case you didn't want to spring for the extra $60+.
But why not buy the best while you're at it.
I recommend this product.
