Active Time:  15 Minutes
Total Time:  30 Minutes
Yield:  Makes 10 biscuits
Biscuit dough is very versatile. Cut it into rounds or any number of shapes, but keep them simple so the pattern is evident as the biscuits rise and bake.
RECIPE INGREDIENTS
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cold shortening, butter, or margarine
2/3 cup milk

DIRECTIONS
In a medium mixing bowl stir together flour, baking powder, sugar, cream of tartar, and salt. Using a pastry blender, cut in shortening, butter, or margarine till mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center; add milk all at once. Using a fork, stir just till dough clings together.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently for 10 to 12 strokes, or till dough is nearly smooth. Roll or pat dough to a 1/2-inch thickness. Cut dough with a floured 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter, dipping cutter into flour between cuts.

Arrange dough rounds on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated 450 degrees F oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or till golden. Remove biscuits from baking sheet. Serve warm.
