We had 2 leftover lamb shanks that had been broiled with meat still attached; used them in this recipe and it turned out great. The strong combination of spices was a good counterpoint to the lamb. I couldn't find my star anise so used anise seed instead. I used green cardamom but I think black would have been fine also. I omitted the sugar, salt and lime juice but otherwise followed the recipe, serving it with an organic multi-grain demi-loaf of bread. I would definitely make this again.
