substitute for almonds?
Can't wait to try this recipe but because of allergies, I can't use the almond slivers for fingernails. Any suggestions for realistic substitutes?

A Halloween Tradition for Our House
My daughter and I have been making these cookies for four years now and they're always a big hit with kiddos and adults alike. Advice: Don't make your fingers too thick or too thin. Thick doesn't look right and thin fingers break. (Yikes!) broken almond slivers also work well and look really gross as fingernails. We've started adding a tiny ball of dough to some of the fingers to create "warts". This baked cookie freezes well too.

Ghoulish
went down very well in the school's Halloween Costume Parade! Instead of using decorating gel, I used some red glaze to stick the almond halves onto the finger. Also drip the red glaze over the fingers for effect.

Tricks for this treat
Macabre and artistic! Plus: They taste good. After making these several times, I've discovered some little "tricks": Use an almond half (rather than a knife) to imprint the nail 'bed' before cooking so that the almond fingernail will adhere better in the red decorating gel. Also, a drop or two of green food coloring gives the cookies a lovely ghoulish tint. Happy Halloween!
