The original Egg Cream recipe was invented by Louis Auster, a Jewish candy shop owner from Brooklyn, New York. According to the story, a national ice cream chain offered him a rather small sum of money for the rights to the recipe, which he refused. When one of the company executives called him by a racial slur, he vowed to take the formula to his grave - and did just that. Nonetheless, most recipes you see for Egg Cream call for the approximate same proportions of chocolate syrup, milk and seltzer water, the only three ingredients in an Egg Cream.
