First of all, this thing is built extremely well - very sturdy, and the suction cup works perfectly - this thing simply does not move once you suction it to your counter. And the suction cup does not leave any marks.
Overall, it works very well and quickly. In a few seconds, you can have an apple cored, peeled, and sliced into spiral rings. The kids love the rings as a snack, but obviously they work well for pies, too.
Once in a while, the peeler will appear to "maul" your apple: instead of nice, neat rings, it appears to shred them. After a couple of tries, I finally figured out that this is simply a matter of making sure the apple is positioned on the prongs so that the core will be centered as it goes through the cutter. A simple way to do this is to pretend you're looking down the barrel of a gun: look through the center of the corer at the bottom of the apple - if it's all lined up everything will work great.
Also once in a while, it will miss some peel on a lopsided apple. This is usually because we're peeling too fast - which is easy to do because this thing is pretty fun. Just back the crank up a half turn and go over the spot again and it will be fine.
Bottom line: after you figure out some subtle nuances, this thing works great, and it's actually fun. If you position the apple for them, kids can actually use it (under adult supervision - there are sharp parts, after all).
The only reason I didn't give it a 5 rating is because you can't adjust the thickness of the rings, and you can't core the apple without also slicing it into rings (say, for baked apples). You can, however, core and slice without peeling.
Also, be aware that this peeler is available in cast iron or cast aluminum. I thought other web sites had this model for cheaper, then I realized they were selling the cast aluminum model. The cast iron model is Back to Basics A505, the aluminum model has an "A" suffix, as in A505A.
My order came quick. It works as says, is sturdy and of good quality. I haven't had any problem with suction. The only problem I did have with it was the peeler does not peel the whole apple as it mainly peels the middle. This really wasn't a big deal though. You also need to use firm fruit with uniform shape for best coring and peeling results. I made dried apples, apple pie and sliced apples, which I froze for later use. This product cut out considerable time and I'm so glad I made the purchase.
I also use it for potatoes and I love it! I just wash the potato and stick it on the corer. You can have it peeled or leave the peel on for extra nutrients. It makes a nice spiral shape and can be popped in the microwave for a few minutes (including potato cores) I use butter, parsley or chives to microwave with them. It's a nice change from mashed or baked.
This was a bit of a challenge to set up for first time use, but the instructions were well written so didn't take long. Once set up this thing is great! Don't know how I got along without one all these years. Makes short work of peeling and coring, and was pleasantly surprised that it also slices... all three tedious chores done with an easy crank of the handle. The only reason I didn't rank this a 5 was because there is no option not to slice, so if you need things left whole this won't do it for ya. But other than that, a good sturdy handy gadget.
I just received this product and only used it one time to peel, core and slice 2 apples. It was so quick and easy after I got my husband to put it together for me. I wish that I had this device before I prepared 5 pounds of apples by hand for a deep dish apple pie recipe for Christmas. I like that this product can peel without slicing because some apple pie recipes require that the apples be cut into sections instead of slices.
You may think it's faster and easier to peel & slice apples by hand, but this peeler is easy and quick to set up and works as promised. Be sure to read directions in terms of clearance measurements for cutting blade. At first I didn't & was frustrated, but when set up correctly, it works beautifully.
Particularly good for folks with pain or agility problems in their hands (like arthritis or neuropathy) This is easy and quick to use, and easy to clean, too. Use it for spiral slicing just one apple for a kid's snack (everyone loves them!), or for making applesauce or lots of apples for several pies at once.
This product makes apple pie-making a breeze. No more peeling and cutting up apples by hand. It also works great for peeling and slicing potatoes - perfect for scalloped potatoes. On draw back is that is difficult to clean, but I have found that running it under hot water works the best, using a scrubby for stuck-on apple.
This product works exactly as depicted in the advertisement. It is a great timesaver when it comes to peeling and coring apples, and I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to save time from the tedious task of peeling and coring apples for pies and related dishes.
It does not work well. There is still much of the apple you must peel yourself. The apple must be completely round or you waste much of the apple. Does not work at all on potatoes like it says. By the time I got done messing with this thing I could have had peeled them by hand and had the pie in the oven.
I love this apple corer! All those years I peeled and cored the apples by hand. What was I thinking? Now I can peel and core apples in a flash. If you bake lots of pies, crisps, and make applesauce it's a must.
We serve a lot of apples at our bed and breakfast, and I always thought these peelers were just a gimmick. Was I ever wrong. Peeling, coring and slicing takes so little time I'm still amazed. Our apple crisps are far more generous these days because preping the apples isn't such a chore. I just wish I could think of something to do with the long, lovely stands of peel. Christmas decorations maybe?
I was very pleased with this product. I have been baking apple pies for many years and was thrilled to find this product that peels, slices and cores. It works wonderfully on all types of apples and makes the the job of peeling apples a pleasure.I highly recommend this product.
The suction base is what sells this for me. Since it doesn't require the edge of a counter for clamping, the peeler can be placed near the sink which offers easy cleanup. The base also facilitates easier storage as it can stand up in a deep drawer. Just reach in and get it.
Hi, A great product. I don't like the way it cores the apples, in small rings. This is fancy and neat to look at but I don't like it for my pies, I prefer thicker chunks that I can work with. But if you get the right sized apple, this product makes it a breeze. I highly recomend it to anyone looking for a peeler who doesnt mind corring the apples another way.
