dangerous slow cooker

by rebecca, PA

I was looking to replace my old vertical cock style slow cooker with one that was shaped more like a roaster with good access to the contents. This slow cooker seemed to fit the bill for a reasonable price. I have been sorely dissapointed. Not only was it cheap looking and not the quality I expected but the first time I used it I discovered that the whole outside of the slow cooker became so hot allover that I severly burned my hand. This I did not expect as the oler models remained cool to the touch or maybe warm, but never hot enough to burn myself on. I am going to collect my order and return this crock-pot pronto!

This crock-pot seemed flimsy and not well constructed, also too large for my needs since the directions say it must be filled 1/2 to 3/4 full for each use. I will be returning this.

Good, but......

The lid doesn't fit properly. The pot itself works great and holds alot of food. The lid though doesn't fit at all against the crock. I would tell someone to try the lid first before buying.

Great Buy

What a great buy. Plus the bonus Little Dipper. It is the perfect size to keep sauces warm. Thanks, for a very dependable product! I have a crock-Pot (same brand) that I have been using since 1980. It is Harvest Gold and still works like a new one!

Six qt. chrome crock-pot

THis RIval crockpot is not only easy to clean, but has an added feature with the temperature at _Warm_......very useful, while waiting to gather everyone at the table. You ot onlly can do a large roast, but a whole chicken or small turkey! The chrome exterior is easy to wipe off and elegant in looks. I am
really enjoying the use of this slow cooker.

I'm a rabid fan of Rival CrockPots, but I won't bore you with rhapsodic odes to the glorious benefits of cooking with one (if you're a CrockPot initiate, you'll just have to discover those on your own, haha). I'll just focus on size for this review. FWIW, I had the 4.5-qt size for a few months, and for a while it did me just fine because I'm single and there's only 1 person in my household (perfect size for 1 person or a couple without any kids, plus 1-2 nights of leftovers) but I also happen to have a big family and entertain a lot, so getting the 6-qt CrockPot + Little Dipper bonus was a good option for me. Yes, you can fit a whole chicken, roast or brisket in the 6-qt one, but you can't fit anything that big in the 4.5-qt. one (although you *might* be able to if it's small and you cut it up in quarters).

As for the 16-oz. Little Dipper (which has the same stainls stl/black scheme), it is VERY basic. Unlike its big sisters, its lid is made out of dishwasher-safe black plastic, not glass or ceramic, the ceramic insert is not removeable (you have to carefully rinse the inside of the unit clean), and the unit has no settings or controls. It is just a simple plug-in, warm-up deal. If you just want to heat up a dip or sauce for a party, it's handy to have, but if you are highly concerned with "control," flexibility and safety issues, you may want to get Rival's electric fondue pot, which has the same stainls stl/black scheme but wih a removeable insert, removeable/adjustable controls, and a breakaway electrical cord. It also holds a lot more than the Little Dipper.

It's BIG

by Diane, CA
December 7, 2008

When our 20 year old 5 quart crock pot died. I bought the 6 quart as a replacement. What a difference a quart makes. Large roasts fit without a problem. No hacking them into little pieces. You just have to make sure that it is filled at least half way and then there are no problems.
I am very glad that I did not get the one with electronic controls. It seems from all the reviews that I have read from many different sources, that they are more trouble then they are worth and fail a lot.
Very happy with my new crock pot.

What a wonderful product!

by Aurora, CA
October 6, 2008

I love it. That's it in a nutshell. The convenience of slow cooking when you are still employed and not home all day is priceless. To come home to a hot dinner that basically cooks itself is well worth owning the product. And the price (with the little dipper) is such a great bargain. I know this product will last me a long time so I cannot say I will buy it again in the NEAR future. But if chance were to happen (wedding gift, birthday gift, etc.) I would certainly keep it in mind. And would I recommend it to my friends? Most Definitely!

My sister says it best: GREAT

by Judith, TX
February 9, 2007

I sent my sister this crock-pot for her birthday. I am now the favorite sister in her eyes. She loves it. She has a huge family and uses it for almost every meal. She especially enjoys the Little Dipper. The pot cooks properly, as expected, evenly, and consistently proper. She like it so much I am probably going to buy another one for me when mine fades.

it does not have the best temp settings and controls but if you are not so pickie on that and size matters to you, go for this one...as this one is big... but if you dont mind a little smaller size, there are better ones available with better temperature settings and for a few extra dollars....

Slow cookery lives on

by Susan, NH
November 26, 2006

I purchased my first crock-pot back in the 1970s, used it a few times, then relegated it to the attic. In those days, the pot and casing were inseperable, which made it difficult to clean. Recently, however, I had been lusting after a new slow cooker, with all of the possibilities of dinner on the table when I get home from work. I looked at all of the models, but was impressed by the design, price, and functionality of this model from Rival (the maker of my original crock-pot). The pot lifts out of the casing for easy cleaning. It is large enough to hold a substantial cut of meat or poultry, or pulled pork for a crowd. The thermostat can cook at two temperatures, as well as hold food for a long time. My problem with slow cookery has always been the recipes--as my neighbor put it,every crock-pot recipe tastes the same." But there seem to be many more resources today than there used to be. Mainstream cookbooks now have slow cookery sections or recipe versions. I look forward to experimenting with slow cooking in the new millennium!

Large and easy to clean

by lane, NY
November 20, 2007

I was surprised by the large size of this crock pot. I never knew 6qt could be so big!

It cooks well, and is easy to clean.

The mini that is provided as a bonus is a perfect size for puddings and fondue.

The lid does not fit flush to the sides of the crock pot. It rests on the internal ledge of the ceramic insert. So no steam escapes, but it is an odd design decision.

Crock-Pot

This pot works great. I've already made several dishes in it. The only issue I had was that the same week I ordered the item and it was being sent, the item was on sale for $10.00 less. I think they (Cooks) should check sale ads and make sure they are competitive.

Dinner when I'm ready

The keep warm feature is one I appreciate. I am happy with the size and the fact that the inside is removable for easy clean-up. Nice looking product with the oval shape to take up less space on the counter was a selling point, too.
