I first saw this thermometer on a cooking show where fudge was being made. With the easy to use/read display and directions this makes a wonderful addition to my holiday baking tools collection!

There could be a short in ours. We couldn't get a temp reading until we fiddled with it - reinstalling the battery, thumping judiciously, etc. When it works, it works well. Operation is blinky at best.
If you have middle-aged eyeballs, you may want to get out the magnifying glass - teeny, tiny writing abounds.
Our pulled mints turned out beautifully.

I used this to make dark chocolate-covered toffee and the results were fantastic! The thermometer beeped at 305 degrees which was the setting for hard crack. Perfect toffee!

The probe is way too long for any regular sized saucepan. There are little stick on labels on the back side of the unit that were loose in the package. If you managed to stick them on again, they would fall into your candy or oil in a minute. The clip scratched my pan. The sensor unit is too heavy for the long probe. It is a bad design and overpriced as well, Do not buy this thermometer,.

I bought this for my mom who likes to make fudge. We have not tried it yet but I have my reservations. It has two stickers on the back that came off in the mail. I put them back on but wonder if they will fall off into the fudge?? The reading material is very small and even I had to use a magnifying glass to read the different levels. So I'm not sure if mom will be able to set the setting correctly or not. She definitely will not be able to read it during the cooking process. So knowing she can't see to set it, I am concerned whether this was a good purchase. The battery was hard to insert, and there is no turn off button. So these are my concerns .

I like the tilt feature of the display, but had to send mine back due to the display not working after only one use. I just received my replacement ( I love the convenience of the cooking.com return policy) and have not yet used it but I am hoping this problem doesn't occur again. I will certainly let you guys know if it doesn't work!

This is the model recommended by Alton Brown and based on my initial use I concurr with his recommendation.

I've owned countless candy thermomters through the years and this one is by far the easiest to read. Candy making should always be such fun!

I burned several batches of candy with this thermometer. The temperature fluctuates so much there is no way to tell what the actual temperature is. Several times the thermometer indicated the temp dropping by 20 to 30 degrees in a matter of seconds then the temp would gradually work back up.
