Does the Job - If You Like Heineken
Pros: Gadget value, good beer.
Cons: Cost per glass, limited beer selection.
Value: The Cooking.com price was great and the delivery was swift, but see below for a cost analysis.
Upon receiving the unit, I went to my local beverage center and bought a 5L keg of Heineken for about $19. It came with two nice-looking 0.25L glasses. A few days later, I received another keg with two more glasses, as a gift.
I chilled the first keg by leaving it outside overnight where the temperature was about 35-40F. I then placed it in the BeerTender, which was easy. The BeerTender comes with five BeerTender tubes. You are instructed not to try to remove them from the keg after it is emptied, thus, you need one tube for each keg.
It would seem logical to include a tube with each keg, but, for some reason, you must purchase them separately. They are available for about $1.50-$2.00 each online, in sets of various quantities.
I'm still on my first keg. The beer tastes fine, and I'm getting better at controlling the foam. A foam skimmer is included.
Calculating the cost of a glass of beer is revealing ...
5L = 20 x 0.25L glasses. The cost of a keg and a tube is roughly $20 with the beer cost varying by locale due to taxes. That comes out to about $1 per glass. 0.25L = 8.5 oz. For a 12 oz glass, your at about $1.40. This compares favorably to what you would pay at a bar, but, at least in SE Wisconsin, I can get Heineken for about $1 a bottle if I buy it by the case.
These calculations do not include the cost of the BeerTender ! ... To justify this cost, you must be a serious user of the unit, or place a high value on the "coolness" factor ...
Note also, at this point, this device only works with Heineken, Heineken Premium Light and Newcastle Brown Ale. In Europe, other beer choices are available.
Note: The Peltier-type cooling system is not designed to cool a keg quickly. If you're in a hurry, use your refrigerator to cool the keg. When I bought my keg, it was a room temperature. Some dealers may sell them chilled.
The cooling system works fine at maintaining the 37F
Before purchase, check your local beverage centers to make sure that the kegs are available.
