Recipes make great guidelines, but cooking times for different foods can vary a great deal from one kitchen to the next. Different heat sources, such as grills and ovens, different altitudes, and varying sizes or densities of food can affect the amount of time needed for a dish to cook to a safe temperature. Instead of slicing open roasts or chicken breasts as they cook to see how they look, we recommend you use the Taylor Instant-Read Digital Thermometer to determine the precise temperature of your dish. The easy-to-read LCD display updates once a second, giving you immediate information on the status of your meal. The thermometer recognizes temperatures between 58 and 302 degrees F, so you can be sure it will work beautifully with any food you're cooking. Just stick the stainless steel probe into the thickest part of your meat, and wait for the temperature to update. When you're not using the thermometer, keep it clean and handy by inserting it into the included plastic case -- it even has a pocket clip, so you can keep it right by your side while you're hovering over the barbecue grill. The convenient on/off switch helps you conserve the battery power when it's not in use, and this thermometer comes out of the box ready to be used -- a battery is included.
Best Used For:
This thermometer is great for measuring the internal temperature of roasts and grilled foods to ensure they've been properly cooked.
Even if you have the 'leave-in' larger thermometers that cook with a roast in oven, every cook needs this one in their 'tool box' too. If you're grilling smaller items on an outdoor BBQ or frying on stovetop, you can use this item to quickly test doneness of thinner cuts of meat such as steaks, burgers, chops, etc. You cannot use the larger ones as easily and quickly for that. Digital readout is the way to go if your vision impaired as I am.
I am very happy with the digital tthermometer I purchased for my husband for Father's Day. It sure beats seeing my husband cut into a beautiful steak to see if it is cooked properly!! However, I did think it a bit pricey.
The thermometer worked fine the first time I used it. The problem came the next time I looked at it-- the battery was dead. Every other battery-operated kitchen gadget I have ever used shuts itself off, but this thermometer does not. You have to turn it off yourself, something that I believe I will forget to do again, which will use up the whole battery. If you can remember to turn it off every single time, then it is not a problem. If you forget even once, you need a brand new battery.
I really like this thermometer for making yogurt. It really makes the job easier as it updates every second. My only wish is that it had a clip to set it on the pan so I could have both hands free but that's a small price to pay for such a great tool.
Battery went dead the first time it was used, replaced battery, now it does not work right. It shows meat being cooked was 57 degrees F.When you cut it off and back on it goes from 18 to55 degrees F in a room that is 75.
I bought one of these a year or so ago and found it really convenient. I especially liked the fact that they gave you a spare battery. Unfortunately the first one died before the first battery did! This one did not work when I got it, but after putting in the spare battery it started to work. Not exactly a hopeful sign. When it is working it is great, but the quality seems to be a bit shaky.
