Add a touch of French culinary heritage to your kitchen with the L. Tremain .5-Cup Ivory Rose Antique Collection Butter Bell Crock. Before the invention of refrigerators, similar crocks (originally called "beurriers") were used by French chefs to keep butter sweet, fresh and spreadable.
Use this crock to keep regular salted, unsalted and compound butters fresh by creating a watertight seal around them. This unique design keeps the butter soft enough to spread easily while maintaining its freshness. For even greater convenience, keep one on the dining table and one next to the toaster. To use the butter bell crock, simply press a stick of butter into the bell piece, put about 1/4 cup of cold water into the bottom of the cup and replace the lid, bell side down. It's best to place your L. Tremain butter bell crock away from direct sunlight or heat to help maintain the proper temperature. Properly used, this device will keep your butter fresh and spreadable for weeks at a time.
Love the Butter Bell but feel the price is a little high. Received one as a gift but it was dropped and broken - had to get another one to replace it. Really liked it and I would have bought more as gifts if the price was lower or if buying multiples qualified for better pricing.
I had been shopping with friends and saw some out of pottery but $50. I came home and had an email from Butter Bell. I decided to order since it was half that price. I was surprised at the quality of this one. I thought it would be lightweight since it was out of china but it passed my expectations. I ordered a few other pieces and they are equally as nice. I am now waiting to get the sugar bowl and large pitcher when back in stock.
Pls. note that the 'overall' rating is based on this item being a gift, not as a matter of use; I will more than likely recommend it to others; and that the price was decreased because I took advantage of a special, and at full price I likely would not have purchased the item in the first place. And about all the "other" answers to the questions below: I don't have simple answers to any of them, and certainly not those listed!
This butter crock does, with some finagling, what it is supposed to do: keep butter malleable and fresh tho' unrefrigerated. I would prefer it took a whole cup of butter, but half a cup is better than none! I did discover that it is wise to add a small chip of ice to the initial water/water at changing to ensure the ceramic is cold enough to hold the butter even if the room should become excessively warm (as kitchens are wont to do). The price I paid was reduced by a special, three-fer, that made it worth my while to take advantage of; at the regular price I would likely not have bought it. I will recommend this to others with the proviso that that check out the availability of other butter crocks (there are more and more on the market), and with the info that ButterBell is in the Target-arena of vendors (about which ButterBell is not upfront), and that the crock is made in China (which is for me and many others a no-go under most circumstances).
This butter crock was shipped promptly and was the size and color I had expected. However, the paint on the swirl design was a little sloppy because a lot if it was off the risen swirls. But overall it didn't look bad so I did not exchange it.
I've always heard about butter crocks and finally tried a Butter Bell Crock. This is great!! The butter stays soft and fresh and I am able to use just a tad on my toast instead of a huge pat -- great for the waistline. Buy this -- you won't be disappointed.
