No peeking! This Calphalon waffle maker is designed to keep you from opening and closing the lid to check your waffles' progress. We find this allows more even cooking, better browning and more consistent finished waffles, and we know this handy appliance will see plenty of use in your kitchen. The No Peek indicator helps you keep an eye on your waffles as they bake without opening the lid, so heat stays consistent and even throughout cooking. A shade selector lets you choose whether you want light, barely toasted waffles or crispy, dark ones. The nonstick interior ensures your finished waffles slide right from the iron onto your plate—just wipe it down with a damp cloth after use so that it's ready for next time.
Best Used For:
Make up to four deep-pocket Belgian-style waffles at one time with this waffle iron. Your finished waffles will be golden brown and ready to be topped with whipped cream, fruit, syrup, or any other goodies you can dream up.

I make waffles for my famiily weekly, some times two batches in a single week! When my old Cuisinart died suddenly I was shocked! I started checking reviews and decided to go with this one. It is a little pricey but worth it. Waffles do not stick, not even the first time. I love the tone it gives when heated and when waffles are done. Buy this, you will not be disappointed!
This is my 3rd wafflemaker in my almost 29 years of marriage. We enjoy a nice family breakfast on weekends and often times we decide it's a waffle kind of day. This Caphalon Waffle Maker is by far the Cadillac, I love it! The quality is unbelievable, and clean up a breeze. It makes beautiful Waffles whether you make batter from scratch or a mix, you cannot go wrong. I highly recommend this item!! Cathy
I'd been thinking about a new waffle iron (I guess they call them waffle makers now) for quite some time. The old Black & Decker model I owned was seeing no usage due to poor performance and messy cleanup.
After a considerable amount of research on numerous websites, I narrowed the field down to two contenders:
* Chef's Choice WafflePro M850. This is clearly one of the best, if not the best, unit out there. Gets great reviews, has excellent non-stick coating which never needs oiling, has separate temperature and timer controls, has very high power (1750 W), and is *assembled* in the USA (for what that's worth). It also costs an obscene amount, $180, and comes with a 1-year warranty. Given the price point, USA factor, and technical hyperbole ("the result of years of research..."), I was disappointed that the manufacturer does not back this up with a better warranty. By the way, coupon codes do not seem to work for any Chef's Choice products.
* Calphalon HE400WM "No Peek". This unit also gets very good reviews on most web sites, but has some worrisome negative comments as well. This also has an excellent non-stick coating, has a single darkness control, and has high power (1500 W). Like almost all other units, it is made (and assembled) in China. It retails for $100 and comes with a 1-year warranty, with 5 years on the non-stick coating. It is important to note that coupon codes are valid on Calphalon products, which may lower the price significantly.
Unfortunately, I was not able to find anyone who had compared these two units directly.
Given all of this, I decided to go for the Calphalon unit. I received this last week, and put it through its paces this past weekend, making 4 different batches of waffles: (1) the recipe included in the User Manual; (2) a pumpkin recipe; (3) an apple recipe; (4) a banana/chocolate-chip recipe. All of these used whole grains and were very low in fat, so were not exactly traditional waffle recipes. Somewhat to my surprise, these all turned out very well, and I am now eager to try even more experimental recipes in the future (a quinoa recipe is beckoning...).
I will mention that the single darkness control is a bit odd; it's not entirely clear whether you're adjusting the temperature or the baking time -- or both. In any case, I didn't play with this much, and used settings between medium and medium-high. All the waffles turned out nicely and evenly browned, both top and bottom. The waffle maker also bakes the waffles relatively quickly, although I'm sure this depends a lot on your recipe, how much batter you load up, and your darkness setting. I didn't time this accurately, but believe the baking time was around 3 minutes. The waffle maker also has lights and a chime to alert you when the waffle is ready. I found this to be generally reliable, except when I overfilled the maker with batter (see below). This same lights-and-chime method also serves to let you know when the waffle maker is preheated.
I will also note that, because the batters I used were very thick (and sometimes chunky), I had trouble with adding too much batter. In this case, I didn't have any issues with overflowing and baked-on messes, but the waffles did get very thick, which popped the waffle maker open a bit and significantly increased the cooking time (which I had to monitor by eye). However, the waffles still cooked thoroughly and tasted great.
The non-stick coating was wonderful. I was able to peel off the finished waffles with my hands. Cleanup was trivial and practically unnecessary -- I just wiped the (cooled) waffle plates with a damp cloth.
Don't expect much from Calphalon customer service. My unit arrived with what I believe to be some minor workmanship issues. Nothing serious, but something I thought a "premium" brand company would want to know. So, I sent a note with some photos. The reply I got back several days later was completely generic ("we sincerely apologize if you have experienced an issue with our product..."). I fired off a retort, and haven't heard back. Cross your fingers and hope that you will never have to contact them.
This was a replacement for the original one ordered several weeks ago. The first waffle iron arrived with a defective control dial. I spoke with customer service, received a pre -paid Fed Ex Mailing label immediately by Email. I took the waffled iron repacked in its original packing to Fed Ex and returned it for exchange. I received my replacement within one week. We have already used it, and it worked perfectly. Many thanks for your great customer service and perfect waffles!
Makes great waffles. The waffles aren't as thick as restaurant style Belgian. But, if they were any thicker the leftover waffles wouldn't fit into a toaster. In other words, the waffles are just right. I was pleased to find that the waffle maker can be stored on it's side - saving countertop space.
I hesitated slightly before purchasing because of the price, but the consistently high reviews finally sold me. I'm so glad! Right out of the box, the waffle-maker looked and felt like a high-quality product! I had a $30 waffle-maker before this one which had no indicator when the unit was heated and ready, or when cooking was finished, and offered no temperature/cooking time options. This waffle-maker chimes when heated, allows you to select the doneness you prefer (light to med to dark), has LED lights that show the stages of cooking, and chimes when the waffles are done! The bonus for me was the fact that the waffles seem to cook in under 2 minutes! I've even had time to make waffles for the kids before school and for the hubby without being late for work! Can't beat feeling like a Super-mom on a weekday morning!
Great waffle iron all around. Well made. However, they could have made the latch that holds it closed a bit better. That's the only flimsy part on the whole thing. But solid buy. I love the variable heat settings!
After reviewing many other Waffle Makers, I settled with this one because of the solid construction, ease of use and cleaning, and of course the non stick surface which makes it easier to remove 4 waffles at the time. This Waffle Maker is also easy to store with its hidden cord storage incorporated underneath the unit. Overall its as easy a 1,2,3, preheat, pour, closed the lid and wait for the beep to tell you the waffles are done. I love it,
I originally had a waffle iron that made 1 waffle only. By the time I made my husbands and served him he was finished eating as I sat down. He always offered to wait for me but who wants cold food. Such a joy to now sit down together. The first time I used it I was more than pleased with the results. A really good buy.
I want all to know that this is the best experience for a great cookware. The HE400WM No PEEK is an absolute beauty. Design craftmanship and performance is an EPIC. It took no time at all once plugged in to start great waffle. My wife and I downloaded several recipes and began to make a Saturday a staple for Belgium Waffles.
Well, this iron does exactly what it should... heats up fast, cooks fast, releases waffles easily, makes perfect* waffles. Add to that it stores easily, is not extremely heavy, is very nice looking and you've got a winner! Highly recommend this waffle!
*The LIGHT to DARK setting doesn't work well, at least on my unit. I set it between MEDIUM and DARK, and had to manually decide when the waffle was done to my satisfaction. 2nd waffle I set it at DARK, and still had to leave it in at least 2-minutes after the indicated DONE. I will contact Calphalon about it. Good news is the iron does make perfect waffles fast!
NOTE TO ANYBODY HAVING TROUBLE WITH WAFFLE SHAPE: I followed the instructions and spread the ~2C batter evenly over the bottom plate = perfectly square waffles.
NOTE TO ANYBODY HAVING TROUBLE WITH WAFFLES STICKING: Waffle batter recipes vary. If you use butter (real butter), the more you use (Joy of Cooking calls for 1/4C->1C) the crispier the waffle and the easier it is to get out of the iron. My recipe called for 1/2C butter and my waffles easily came out to the iron. And they were excellent in flavor, but we like butter ;-)
I was worried about having to replace my old waffle maker. I had it for over 30 years and it made good waffles. My new Calphalon waffle maker makes GREAT waffles!!! It is easier to use than I expected, looks great and the waffles are perfectly cooked every time! Oh and I couldn't believe how fast the waffles get done...this thing is WONDERFUL!!!
I like all of the products and I have quite a few.
Last product I ordered was a waffle maker. The waffle maker arrived in a few days. My wife order a waffle maker the same day without telling me. The one she ordered from Amazon arrived two weeks later plus she had to pay sales tax.
This is my first waffle maker and it does its job for No Peek.
Very simply to use, just plug it in and set the dial where you want it and when ready, it'll chime, if you forget listening to it, it'll chime again.
I would recommend this waffle maker to others.
Our tired old waffle iron was failing fast. We got it from one of those supermarket special deals when you bought a certain amount of groceries. It served us ok for several years but it took a long time to make a waffle and they were inconsistent and frequently stuck to the no stick surface(even after it had been sprayed with a non stick spray though it wasn't supposed to be necessary). We had decided it was time for a new one so I started my search. I found the Calphalon no peek waffle maker on the internet. It sounded pretty good and the reviews seemed very favorable. I liked the no-peek chime feature and the high cooking power. It seemed like a costly purchase for a retiree on a fixed income but I was too intrigued to pass it up. Last weekend we made our first batch of waffles on it. They were great!! This thing heated up very quickly and a full set of waffles cooks in right around 3 minutes. The old one often took 10 minutes or more and you had to open it now and then to check on it. This no peek machine was a great purchase and I think we'll be enjoying waffles much more than we have in the past. We love it and would recommend it without hesitation.
I used to be terrible at peeking every couple of minutes to see if a waffle was done. This lead to uneven cooking and my husband didn't really relish me making waffles. Now he loves them. Thanks for putting a timer so that I know when the waffle is ready. :)
This makes wonderful waffles and I love the chime feature. No more guessing when the waffle is done. The fact that it stands on end and the chord is stored on the back is great. It makes large waffles but takes up very little storage space.
I was pleasantly surprised at the speed of delivery and quality of product. I looked for the item locally but was not able to find it, and ordered it based on other reviews. It holds the entire batter recipe, unlike my former one, and the waffle was cooked to perfection, melt-in-your-mouth scrumptious.
