I have a large, self-contained steamer, but sometimes you do not need a steamer that large and this is where the steamer insert comes in. It fits in two of my All Clad pots, which is very convenient. It performs excellent in steaming vegetables and, as opposed to a steamer basket, allows you to easily handle the items being steamed. Highly recommended.
