In the past, toasters worked great for bread but not so wonderful for bagels. With this KitchenAid toaster, bagels come out perfect every time without over-browning the crusty outsides. Touch the Bagel button and your bagel browns lightly on the outsides while the sliced insides brown deeply and darkly. The KitchenAid toaster is equipped with an Even-Heat system with deep toasting cavities and heavy-gauge heating elements. An electronic heat sensor makes sure your bagels, toast and muffins are perfect every time. The KitchenAid toaster has a Warm function for reheating items, and comes with extra-wide slots and variable shade settings for breads that are light and dark, depending on preferences. Place your bread inside - the racks center your bread in the toasting cavities for even browning; an Easy Lift lever helps you retrieve your bread once finished. One other feature of this KitchenAid toaster includes a cord that wraps underneath for storage.

The process is still trial and error and the result is still inconsistent and irregular.
The centering racks center the top, but not the bottom half of the toast. The manual acknowledges and tries to explain how to guess the best setting for various items, depending on water content of the item and whether it is frozen.

I also tried the option of warming up the frozen bread which worked like a charm. The toast turns out perfectly. I LOVE THIS TOASTER! It is also beautiful and does not slide easily around on the counter which is a plus.

We had to crank it all the way to the highest setting to get it to toast bread or a bagel in reasonable fashion. Very disappointed, because this is rated very high in Consumer Reports. The lower settting are useless.
