by mary (Birmingham, AL) 3 reviews Pros: Able to make small batches of ice cream product in about 25 minutes without getting out the big old fashioned and much loved white mountain churn. Can use own ingredients and decrease the amount of fat and sugar in the product if that is your goal. Open top allows you to add ingredients at different points in the cycle. Cons: It does make some noise, not unbearable, just requires an upping of the volume for conversation, so I just plan accordingly. The freezer bowl takes up space in the freezer (but you knew that) and if you touch the inside of the bowl when it is frozen--beware---that's what it is---frozen! and so will be your finger tip. I keep mine in a large zip top bag in the freezer, to keep crumbs etc. from getting in it. Not sure about the studiness of the plastic dasher, but so far so good. You do have to get the product out of the bowl when you think it is finished, or the edges will freeze hard. Overall: Had it about 6 weeks and love the item, have developed a recipe to use up all sorts of summer fruits.....would buy it again if/when this one breaks or fails.
I was hoping for a totally self-contained devise. It appears well made. Essentially the outer shell rotates and the blades remain stationary. I don't understand why it is so important to keep the chamber wrapped to avoid freezer burn. I've used it once to make the ice cream from a recipe that came with the unit. It was okay. If you want real ice cream consistency, you have to: 1. pre-freeze the chamber before using 2. refreeze the ice cream after using. I wish it was all a one stage process.
