why bother with the crock pot
It takes a good hour to carmalize 5 lbs of onions. Just stick with the pot that you're using. You don't have to transfer to a crock pot. Not to mention all of the good flavors on the bottom of your carmalizing pot! This recipe is pretty ridicules.

In praise of reading carefully
Just a note to Richard: Clearly, you didn't read the recipe for making the caramelized onions that are the base of this soup, nor did you read this soup recipe clearly. You make the caramelized onions (which takes 12-14 hours in the crockpot) and then you *add* the broth and let it heat up. The soup is excellent! Try it (without the chip on your shoulder). You might like it :-)

Try it you will like it
The recipe that goes with this one is "Slow Cooker Caramelized Onions". You cook the onions in your slow cooker for 12-24 hours. Then you can continue to make the soup! It is an easy hands off way to make Onion Soup. It is great....If you like onion soup, you will love this one!

Well I thought that it was just me and that I was missing something - who in their right mind would go to all the bother of taking out the slow cooker and basically 'heat up' onion soup. Just caramelize the onions in a large heavy bottomed pot; add the remaining ingred; and let it go!! Use your head!!!

Sounds wonderful but how do you caramelize the onions first?

What!?
This has to be the most ludicrous recipe that I've ever seen printed. "Put caramalized onions and stock in a crock pot and heat them until hot". You have got to be kidding! What a waste of printed space.
