My sister has always made a similar bacon-wrapped water chestnut where the sauce used is a simple bottle of sweet/sour sauce. Very easy in a pinch. This recipe sounds like there would be a bit of a glazed effect by using the brown sugar. I usually cook the bacon about half way in the microwave before wrapping the water chestnuts. They then bake up quicker and aren't swimming in as much grease. This works great with shrimp also.
