Nothing evokes Christmas memories like the aroma of simmering spices drifting through the house. This fragrant cider is perfect for sipping while decorating the tree, wrapping presents, or just relaxing with the family and a good jigsaw puzzle.
RECIPE INGREDIENTS
2 cinnamon sticks, each 3 inches long
1/2 teaspoon whole allspice
12 whole cloves
1 quart (4 cups) cranberry juice cocktail
1/4 cup maple syrup
2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 quart (4 cups) apple cider
Orange and lemon slices studded with whole cloves for garnishing

DIRECTIONS
Place the cinnamon, allspice, and cloves on a small cheesecloth square, bring the corners together and tie securely with kitchen string. (If you don't have cheesecloth, add the spices to the juice and pour the mixture through a sieve before adding the cider.)

In a soup pot, mix together the cranberry juice, maple syrup, and lemon juice. Add the spice bag and place over medium heat. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer for 20 minutes to blend the flavors. Remove from the heat, cover, and let steep for 15 minutes.

Remove and discard the spice bag and stir in the apple cider. Reheat to desired temperature. Ladle into individual mugs, a prewarmed punch bowl, or 1 or 2 vacuum-type pump pots. Garnish each drink or the punch bowl, or 1 or 2 vacuum-type pump pots. Garnish each drink or the punch bowl with orange and lemon slices.

Wonderful for Holiday Get Togethers
I have used this recipe for Holiday events for several years. It is tart and sweet and wonderful served hot with sweet tidbits and savory appetizers. The longer you steep with the spices, the deeper the flavor. Very good made ahead and reheated.
