You can start this spiced coffee up to a day in advance by boiling the spicy syrup and then keeping it in the refrigerator. Bring the mixture to a boil and then add the coffee grounds right before serving.
- 4 cups water
- 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 allspice berries
- 2 whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon aniseeds
- 1 cup dark roast coffee beans, medium grind or 3/4 cup pre-ground coffee beans
- 4 cups whole milk
Combine water, sugar, cinnamon, allspice, cloves and aniseeds in heavy large saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar melts. Stir in coffee, remove from heat. Steep 5 minutes. Strain coffee through fine sieve or coffee filter into serving pitcher.
Using espresso machine, heat milk in frothing pitcher until frothy. Pour coffee into glasses, serving frothed milk alongside and allowing guests to add milk as desired (we prefer about half coffee and half milk).
