This recipe is an old time family favorite.
1 large egg
2 tablespoons unsalted butter , melted, plus extra for frying
3/4 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon table salt
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
4 to 6 slices of 'French Toast Bread' similar in appearance to Texas Toast, square 1-inch thick slices usually found in the bread aisle of your grocery store.

Heat a nonstick griddle over medium heat for 5 minutes. Beat egg in shallow pan. Whisk in butter, then milk and vanilla, sugar, flour, salt, and cinnamon, continuing to whisk until smooth. Soak bread without oversaturating, 30 seconds per side. Pick up bread and allow excess batter to drip off; repeat with remaining slices.

Melt 1 tablespoon butter in hot griddle. Transfer prepared bread to griddle; cook until golden brown. Cut toast in half on the diagonal and arrange in a row on a plate, over-lapping slices. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup on the side. Continue, adding 1 tablespoon butter to skillet for each new batch.
