Gingerbread French Toast

Makes 4 servings, and it takes about 25 minutes to make and cook, start to finish.
One of the kids who tested this recipe wanted to know if we would get to make French toast out of actual gingerbread. That does sound good, but if we soaked gingerbread in the batter it would turn to mush and you'd have a big mess instead of breakfast. To make something just as delicious, we add gingerbread spices (cinnamon, ginger and allspice) to the batter. Then we put in some bread to soak up all the flavor. It's almost like having dessert for breakfast!
- For the Toast:
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon powdered ginger
- 1 teaspoon allspice
- 3 or 4 slices Italian or sourdough bread, or challah (egg bread)
- For the Topping (you choose):
- Real maple syrup
- Sliced peaches or strawberries
- Powdered sugar
- Tools: Small bowl for breaking the eggs, 2-cup liquid measure, whisk, pie pan, dinner knife for cutting butter, frying pan, spatula, plates and forks for eating!
NOTE: Should you ask an adult for help? That's up to you, but make sure there is an adult in the house who knows you are doing this and can help you set up. And, of course, if there is any task you feel uncomfortable doing, ask for help.
