Thousand Island Dressing

Makes 2 cups. (Serves 16)

This creamy dressing is full of flavor and often served over a chef's salad. You could also use it in sandwiches or with burgers.


  • I cup homemade or good-quality commercial mayonnaise
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/3 cup pepper relish or chili sauce
  • 1 small onion, grated
  • 1 red or green bell pepper, seeded and finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Tabasco, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon brandy, or to taste


In a bowl, stir the mayonnaise, ketchup and pepper relish until combined. Stir in the onion and bell pepper, then add the Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco and brandy, each to taste. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate until needed. Make the dressing at least 20 minutes ahead of serving and keep covered in the refrigerator to allow the flavors to develop.

Tip: Try serving this dressing on a crisp salad of iceberg lettuce. To turn the salad into a meal, add chilled cooked shrimp and large garlicky croutons.
