This stovetop moka express is used for making rich, authentic espresso. Made of aluminum, its distinctive 8-sided shape diffuses heat perfectly, releasing a wonderful aroma.

Bialetti is the world's most recognized coffee company - in fact, 90 percent of families in Italy own a Bialetti product. Its quality and authenticity have expanded from the original Moka Express to dozens of coffee makers used for producing flavorful Italian coffees.

To Use:
Pour water in the boiler. Insert the funnel-shaped metal filter into the base. Add finely ground coffee to the filter. Screw the upper section tightly on the base. Place the pot on a heat source until the water is brought close to boiling point creating steam in the boiler. A gasket ensures a tightly closed unit and allows for pressure to safely build up in the lower section, where a safety valve provides a necessary release in case this pressure should get too high (with clean filters, that should not happen).

The steam eventually reaches a high enough pressure to gradually force the surrounding boiling water up the funnel through the coffee powder and into the upper chamber where the coffee is collected. When the lower chamber is almost empty, steam bubbles mix with the upstreaming water, producing a characteristic gurgling noise.

As with percolators, the pot should not be left on the stove so long that the coffee boils. Ideally, with a little practice, it should be removed from the heat before it actually starts gurgling--usually, when only about half of the top chamber has been filled.

Good product, but wait/hurry process

by Lisa, LA
May 16, 2008

Cute and small espresso maker, easy to prepare espresso. But it takes some waiting time - up to 10 minutes depending on how hot you set your stovetop - and after the waiting, then comes the hurrying period when the second it stops dripping you have to quickly get it in your cup before it gets a bitter taste from sitting in the hot machine. I was wondering why it tasted bitter and asked a barista at Starbucks who told me I wasn't getting it out fast enough - I have about 20 seconds! So if you have kids or a telephone or other distractions, get ready for bitter, haha. Also when you wash it, you must towel dry it or it shows every water spot. Good price, just ok product.

This is a really neat maker. cost is very low; it makes 4 oz quickly... and the taste is just great. I ordered replacement parts for the parts that wear out... For a simple espresso for two, it's perfect.

I have followed the advice of other users: make sure it is tight, don't clean in dishwasher, and use medium temp. The results: I love it. works great and makes great espresso. Highly recommend it!

Authentico

by Diane, FL
January 1, 2008

The stovetop espresso pot is truly authentic Italian. Remember to place the correctly ground coffee heaping in a mound before screwing the lid tight tight tight. Brew slowly over medium heat, it takes a little time, but the results prove pure ambrosia. I'm thrilled Starbucks carries this little "machinetta."

Worth the $20?

by Collin, MA
January 3, 2008

I bought this machine because I was hoping that it would help me make a nice latte. It does and doesn't. You have to really pay attention to this little guy because if you don't your espresso may get too hot or not hot enough. Also, I have no idea how to make a good white chocolate mocha at home so I stuck paying a ridiculous $5 a day to starbucks. I'd rather pay the five bucks than spend an hour melting chocolate and figuring out that I can make a latte that tastes half as good. It's a decent machine...not enough crema for me though.

The espresso made from this is great.

by Justin, NY
December 28, 2007

The espresso made with this is great, It isn't the best but I like it. Its very easy to use, easy to clean. NOT DISHWASHER SAFE, you could wash it in the dishwasher, but when it comes out of the dishwasher it lost most of its shine and it looks slightly rusted. Also the color changed because of the dishwasher. Besides its only downside (not dishwasher safe). I love it, so easy to use and great results. 3 / 5.

6 cup Expresso or 1 1/2 Cups of Americano

by Tamara, OR
December 16, 2009

I first found this coffee maker in New Zealand and purchased one for my daughter. I had taken an expresso maker that I purchased for camping. I then purchased an additional one to bring home to my daughter-in-law here in Oregon. I searched stores here and did not find this model in the stores, that is when I went on-line and found it. I used this Expresso maker to make 1 1/2 Cups of the Best Americano you could get. I use a little more than a tablespoon of finely ground coffee and fill it with water and it is wonderful. I purchased two of these because I want to take them when I go camping, they work wonderfully on a propane camp stove. This is a very sturdy expresso maker and should last a very long time.

Amazing

by Kim, IL
January 5, 2010

Bought the French Press and this at the same time - I am never at a loss for amazing coffee now. This creates almost frothy espresso - not like your usual in the store, but still pretty great. I recommend mixing decaf to not give yourself a headache. Easy to drink the whole pot yourself.

Easy and Delicious Espresso

by William, ID
April 23, 2010

This unit is nice for the mornings when you don't have time to slave in front of the semi-automatic espresso machine. Just fill it with water and coffee then boil. Also good for camping or rv's.

I loved this Moka, it's been around for ever and it truly works, my only problem is that it makes to much coffe I would like it to have been for (2-c.) but I couldn't find one.

Great Product!

by Judith, MD
September 12, 2010

I bought one for myself a few weeks ago and loved it so much that I bought two more to give as gifts. I think it is a great gift idea, reasonably priced, small size for easy cabinet storage and something they might not think of to buy for themselves. Ironically, one of the espresso makers was for my niece who had just bought one for herself! (and loves it!)

BIaletti Moka Pot 6 cup

by Bronwen, FL
April 18, 2012

I read tons of reviews before making my purchase, and watched YouTube videos on how to use the Moka Pot...it is unbelievably simple and I can't believe I didn't buy one years ago! And it will look beautiful in my kitchen. If you are looking for a cup of strong coffee, I recommend ordering the 6 cup size, as the "cups" are espresso-sized and not standard coffee cup size. I bought this instead of a Keurig...one third the price AND made in Italy instead of China! And I can still make a cup of coffee in about the same amount of time.
