Earthy and unpredictable, with an unusually concentrated flavor, heavy full body and deep, earthy aroma. Sumatra is Starbucks best selling single origin coffee.

Sumatra is one of the largest islands of Indonesia, a country comprised of several thousand islands stretching along the equator from Malaysia to Papua New Guinea in Southeast Asia. Ninety percent of the coffee grown in Indonesia comes from small, independent farms. Because the value of coffee is high, farmers grow this crop close to home, often in the backyard. After harvest, the farmer takes the coffee to the nearest milling co-op. Here it is combined with coffee from other small farms and sold. Eleven million people depend on coffee for their livelihood in Indonesia.

Most of the coffee grown in Indonesia is robusta. Therefore, the search for the arabica coffee that is ultimately used in Sumatra is arduous, challenging and always an adventure.

Finding and purchasing the best green beans in the world is the first step that differentiates Starbucks Coffee from the rest of the coffee industry. Starbucks is well-known for its exceptionally high quality coffees, care in selection, and expertise in roast. Each coffee is selected for the defining qualities that distinguish its origin. This careful selection process illustrates Starbucks passion for buying and roasting the world's best coffee.

Mmmmm Fermented Chocolate

Although it's billed as "Extra Bold", I found it to be in the medium to bold range not as strong as French. I do not like mochas, too much chocolate ruins a good coffee. But there's a hint of cedar, fruit & chocolate in the smell and taste of Starbucks' Sumatra blend. Makes me think of sipping coffee in Heidi's alpine meadows relax and enjoy it.

I usually love Starbucks' Sumatra but this tasted off to me, perhaps not fresh.

We like the darker roasts so we enjoyed the Sumatra. I would buy it again. We usually get French roast or house blend too.
