-- From the Introduction

Nothing is more important to Paula Deen than her family, and nothing makes that big family happier than sitting down to a meal together. In Paula Deen's The Deen Family Cookbook, Paula and the Deens, Hiers, Groovers, and Orts share their recipes and memories.

Paula's beloved Aunt Peggy makes an Old-Fashioned Meat Loaf that's as good in sandwiches the next day as it is for dinner. Baby brother Bubba Hiers brings his Beer and Onion Biscuits to the table, and his daughter, Corrie, makes a simple but luscious Lemony, Buttery Baked Fish that's perfect for a weeknight dinner. (Her Carrot-Pecan Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting are pretty tasty, too!) Son Jamie makes Huevos Rancheros, perfect for brunch, or try Bobby's Whole Wheat and Honey Pancakes. Husband Michael Groover knows his way around a grill: try his Company's Coming Grilled Steak and Veggie Supper for easy entertaining, and finish the evening with his Irish Coffee.

Of course, there was no way The Lady herself was going to let her relatives have all the fun: Paula is, after all, Paula. She shares her recipe for the Ham and Chutney Biscuit Fingers she puts on the table at every family party as well as the Eggplant and Sausage Lasagna that went a long way toward getting the boys to eat their vegetables. And while there's plenty of butter, bacon, and mayonnaise in these pages, you'll find some of the lighter recipes that Paula enjoys, too: Seared Scallops with Pineapple-Cucumber Salsa is her first choice for a healthful but romantic supper with Michael, and Oven-Fried Chicken Breasts with Honey-Yogurt Drizzle lets Paula indulge in her favorite foods without guilt and with room for dessert.

With more than 140 recipes and dozens of beautiful color photographs, there's something here for everyone. So invite over all those aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, and treat them to some home cooking, Deen family style.

Customer Reviews

Good content, delivery issues

by Susan, TX

The cookbook itself is up to Paula Dean's usual standards. The book cover was torn and put on upside down. I have had a few problems with the shipping of products from the company who does her shipping. (items substituted without notification, items out of stock and I did not know until I called and they did not arrive) Due to that I never called about this. If Paula would look into some of the issues with her shipping I would love to recommend virtually anything she has sent.

Bought the book for a Christmas gift. Paula never disappoints! Surprised it was a hardback book, not the greatest for use in the kitchen, but great for the price!

The Dean Family Cookbook

by Sara, OR
October 8, 2009

My mother was from the south so we grew up with the good southern cooking that Paula's cookbook has. The recipies may not match exactly, but there really isn't much difference. The recipies that are "new" to me in the book, are fantastic! I can't wait to try some of them. Thank goodness that there is such a thing as "southern cooking", otherwise, eating would be so "common". (I was raised in the north, so I have been exposed to all types of American cooking.) I guess I just love to eat!

Paula Deen's Family Cookbook

by Kelly, MO
October 16, 2009

This book has great little stories about Paula and her family. The recipes are great and easy to follow. Most are on the easy to intermediate side of cooking skill. Lots of wonderful holiday treat and breakfast ideas. I am sure several of these will become our family favorites.

not exactly what i thought i was getting...

by Barbara, IA
October 16, 2009

I bought the book for a birthday gift for a friend who, like me, is a Paula Deen fan. My only disappointment is (and I had already sent an e-mail with no response) that I swear it was advertised as "signed by the author" on a book plate...it was not.

by Pamela, FL
October 26, 2009

Ordered copy with signed book plate. NOT what I got from Food Network Store. Could not resolve issue with them. But, THANK YOU Paula ...contacted her site and they made it right. In the future I will pay a little extra directly to the source and get what was advertised!!

Love This book

October 27, 2009

I love Paula Deen! I would have given this book a 5, but because the website showed it as available and when I tried to order it, it showed out of stock, I was disappointed. I really wanted to have a signed copy!

Not what I expected

by Nina, NY
November 3, 2009

This book was not what I wanted. I wanted comfort foods and this didn't appear to have much of them in there. There was only about 3 or 4 that I saw that I would have tried even.

Misrepresented

by Beverly, AZ

I ordered this book partly because it was suppose to be signed. It was not, and that was very disappointing to me. I probably will not order another Deen cookbook.

I have these pans myself and haven't had them very long. The pans are sticking. I don't know if I have misused them or not.
I bought pans for my daughter as Christmas gift. I took the divided
out between them to gift wrap and the divider was thrown away. When she saw how mine are sticking, she doesn't want hers. I don't know if I can return them without the divider.

not what I expected

The book is a good Deen cookbook but it was advertised as a signed copy, when it arrived I was so dissapointed. The "signed" part of the book was a sticky note I could peel and place in the book not an actual signed book ! Will just wait till the chefs come to a local store from now on.
