In 1975, The Cooks' Catalogue was published to enormous critical and commercial success--hailed by The New York Times as a must for anyone interested in food and cooking. Now, on the 25th anniversary of the original publication, Burt Wolf, Florence Fabricant and a team of more than 100 of the world's leading food authorities bring us an all-new, thoroughly updated, expanded book.
This book provides information about the brands, sizes, and uses of over 1000 items of kitchen equipment, from paring knives to grill pans to espresso machines. Each entry is accompanied by a color photograph and includes tips on care, exceptional features and possible drawbacks. Also included are sections such as What to Look For when purchasing items, as well as recipes and sidebars by such culinary celebrities as Julia Child, Jacques Pepin, Alice Water and Mario Batali.

No Comparison To Original
Well, I owned the first Cooks' Catalog when it came out in the 1970's (?) and referred to it many times and used it for the next 30 yrs or so. In my many house moves, I inadvertently lost this book and have regretted it ever since.
Now you are touting this "new" Cooks' Catalog that I see was published in 2000 and I recently purchased it, with the old Cooks' Catalog in mind. This "New Cooks' Catalog" is not a product I would buy, if I had the opportunity to leaf through it before purchase.
I actually would like to return the book, but haven't had time during this busy holiday season, so it may end up sitting on the bottom (mostly inaccessible) shelf of my bookcase, to gather a little dust.
The New Cook's Catalogue is Terrific
As a serious foodie, I'm always on the lookout for great kitchen cooking tools and gadgets. This book not only provides a great reference for those items you might not have, but also for those you've been shopping for but just didn't know about the quality and value. It's a great book to have on hand and reference before buying tools and gadgets for your kitchen.

New Cook's Catalog is a misnomer. The book was published in 2000 and the material is very outdated. If you are thinking of purchasing this book as a guide to buying new cookware, don't bother. It doesn't list prices for equipment. It is a decent primer for explaining types of equipment, but if I had to do it all over again, I would take a pass. It's a shame, because if it was published on an annual basis and regularly updated,(like Consumer Reports annual catalog) I would probably get it every year. Your money is better spent subscribing to Cook's Illustrated. In addition to great recipes, product reviews are recent and frequently updated.

Has influenced several of my purchased and I have happily kept all but one of the items. My husband gets a kick out of it when I review items in this book (and sometimes take it with me to the store) so can be certain that I am picking the best item.

2 of 3 users found this helpful. Was it helpful to you? Yes | No Report Violation »Very informative reading. The reviews are sometimes a little dated since new products are coming out daily, but the descriptions of what to look for and the sidebars on various aspects of cooking are most helpful.
